BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Six members of the No. 9 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team were among 65 student-athletes named to the 2001 SEC Academic Honor released Wednesday by the conference office.
Alex Hartman, Jim Jacobs, Martin Selin, James Shortall, Kristofer Stalhberg and David Blackburn represent Ole Miss on the honor roll. The award is based on grades from the 1999-2000 academic calendar.
"We have a great tradition here at Ole Miss in men's tennis, of excelling both on the court and in the classroom," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "Having six players named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll is a tremendous honor. These student-athletes are outstanding representatives of the University of Mississippi."
With his selection to the honor roll, Blackburn became the first Rebel tennis player to be named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll four years. He has been a member of the Chancellor's Honor Roll every semester and recently received the Taylor Medal for the most outstanding student in the School of Accounting. Blackburn graduated from the University of Mississippi last May and is in graduate school.
Shortall made the honor roll for the third year. The Feilding, New Zealand, native, passed 25 hours last semester and made one of the Universities three honor rolls for the seventh consecutive semester. He is ranked No. 28 in singles and No. 16 in doubles with a combined dual match record of 31-8.
Hartman, who is currently ranked No. 9 in singles, made the honor roll for the first time he was eligible. The sophomore from Klippan, Sweden is majoring in Business. Jacobs, a Business major from Jackson is also a first time honoree. He has been a member of the Chancellor's Honor Roll every semester.
Selin, a Helsingborg, Sweden native, is making his second appearance on the honor roll and is also a Business major. Stahlberg joins Selin as a two-time member of the honor roll. He is presently ranked No. 31 in singles and No. 16 in doubles with Shortall. Stahlberg is 18-2 in dual matches this spring.
The Rebels begin their quest for a SEC Tournament Championship Friday in Lexington, Ky. They will face the winner of the Kentucky/Vanderbilt match at 3:00 p.m., CT.
