BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Ole Miss junior first baseman/designated hitter Josh Christian has been named the Southeastern Conference's Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Christian, 6-feet-4, 229 pounds from Clinton, Miss., went 7-for-11 at the plate with two home runs and eight RBIs while playing in four of the Rebels' five games last week. All seven of his hits were for extra bases as he recorded five doubles and two home runs for a 1.636 slugging percentage. He also recorded a .750 on-base percentage, reaching base safely in 12-of-16 plate appearances.
"It's a great honor for Josh to be selected as the SEC Player of the Week with so many great players in this conference," said first-year Rebel head coach Mike Bianco. "He is certainly deserving of this honor with the numbers he put up this past week."
In Ole Miss' series victory over Vanderbilt in Nashville over the weekend, Christian went 6-for-8. He went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs in Friday's 17-6 win over the Commodores and just missed a third homer as his double hit high off Vanderbilt's left field "monster." In Saturday's game, he went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and was 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs in Sunday. He was also twice hit by a pitch in the Sunday game.
Ole Miss is 34-14-1 on the season, including 16-8 in the SEC. The Rebels are ranked No. 9 in this week's Collegiate Baseball Top 30, No. 15 in the Baseball America Top 25, and No. 21 in the Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Top 25.
The Rebels will host Mississippi Valley State Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m., before traveling to Knoxville, Tenn., to begin a three-game SEC series with Tennessee Friday evening.
