9/18/2001 | Women's Tennis
Sept. 18, 2001
Whether it's charging the net for a volley or coming up with aces in the classroom, Mira Radu is a strong addition to any athletic program. The junior from Cluj-Napoca, Romania, has helped keep Ole Miss on the national map in women's tennis.
Radu is an unselfish player who is willing to fill whatever role is assigned to her as evidenced by her playing several positions in the lineup throughout her career. The junior came to Ole Miss after winning several titles internationally on the junior circuit. Since joining the Ole Miss program, Radu has come up big in several matches for the Lady Rebels.
She ended the year ranked 37th in the nation her freshman season (1999-2000) with a 35-12 overall record and qualified for the NCAA Championships in singles. Radu has also competed in the National Indoor Championships, the National Clay Court Championships and the prestigious Riviera All-American Championships.
Radu posted wins over top players from Baylor, Georgia and Florida in the 2001 season for the Lady Rebels. The junior also came up big in the first round of the NCAA Tournament with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Fernanda Tsucamoto of LSU to push the Lady Rebels into the second round.
The International Business major is a member of the 3.0 Club, and has earned spots on the Chancellor's Honor Roll, Dean's Honor Roll and University of Mississippi Athletic Association (UMAA) Honor Roll. Radu has also been named to the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Radu's efforts in the classroom have been critical in helping the Lady Rebels win the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award for two straight seasons.
For excellence in both tennis and academics, Mira Radu is this week's Allstate Student Athlete of the Week.
