Rebel Netter Advances To Round Of 16 At Southern Collegiate

ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore Ole Miss men's tennis player Paul Ciorascu advanced to the round of 16 in Division I Singles at the Southern Collegiate Championships Saturday, before falling in a close three-setter to South Florida's Martin Wetzel.

Ciorascu won the first set 7-5, and had two break points to go ahead 5-4 in the second set, but Wetzel held him off and then won the second set 6-4 to even the match. Wetzel took the third set by the same score to win the match.

"Paul played well this weekend," assistant coach Mark Beyers said. "The guy he beat in the first round, he lost to in our match against Auburn last year. The third round match was very close, and Paul had a couple of chances in the second set to give himself an opportunity to serve for the win. Wetzel beat one of Florida's top players earlier in the tournament."

In the second round, Ciorascu rallied to defeat Leonardo Matta of Armstrong Atlantic State 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Ciorascu took out Auburn's Mark Kovacs in the first round on Friday, 7-5, 6-4, avenging a loss to Kovacs in the Rebels' regular season meeting against Auburn last year.

Sophomores Jim Jacobs and Mason Cousins led 7-4 in their doubles match against Zach Dailey and Josh Tarkoff of Vanderbilt, but eventually saw the Commodore pair come back to take a 9-7 win.
