Late Goal Lifts Ole Miss Soccer Past Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Ole Miss' Kristal Menard connected from six yards away with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to break a scoreless game and give the Rebel soccer team a 1-0 win at Northern Arizona Sunday.
Sophomore Erin Cooper drove in from the left side and set up Menard in front of the goal at the 87:49 mark. It was the first career goal for the freshman from Crestwood, Ky.
"This win will be the turning point in our season," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "I was proud of the way the girls fought until the very end. They never stopped believing. It was a great way to finish this road trip."
Ole Miss (3-4) mixed up its lineup Sunday with seven new starters, including four freshmen making their first career starts. However every player on the UM bench saw action as the Rebels combated the high altitude of Flagstaff.
After being outshot 8-3 in the first half, the Lumberjacks (3-3) threatened after the break with an 8-6 shot advantage. Sophomore Brittany Gillespie started in goal for the Rebels and went 73 minutes before being relieved by senior Melinda Smith in the combined shutout.
Ole Miss midfielder Megan Bowman, who was making her second start of the year, suffered a possible tear of her right ACL midway through the first half. The junior from Lawrenceville, Ga., could miss the remainder of the 2001 season.
On Friday nght, Erin Edmundson netted her first career goal, but it was not enough as the Rebels fell short at Arizona State, 3-1.
Down 1-0, Ole Miss evened the game at the 15:07 mark when Anna Sanders passed to Lindley Beckman who one-timed it to Edmundson, a sophomore defender from Raleigh, N.C., for a 12-yard header. It was the second assist of the season for Beckman, and the first for Sanders.
