AUBURN, Ala. - Ole Miss tied the game early but could not hold off Auburn in a 3-1 soccer loss Sunday on the Plains, giving the Rebels a split in their first weekend on the road in SEC play. Ole Miss (10-2-1, 2-2 SEC) knocked off Alabama Friday, 2-1, to earn its first ever victory in Tuscaloosa.

The Tigers (11-3, 3-1 SEC) jumped ahead quickly on Sunday, with Jaqueline Schwarz booting home a Christina Culver corner kick three minutes in. At the 16:25 mark, the Rebels answered when Karen Hall sent a ball ahead to Kelly Renie, who took it in one-on-one with the keeper for the score. It was Renie's second goal of the weekend and 14th of the season.

However, Auburn would strike again before the break, capping a first half that saw a 9-3 Tiger shot advantage. Sarah Power netted her fifth goal of the year at 30:15 to give Auburn a 2-1 halftime lead it would not relinquish.

The Rebels controlled the ball much of the second half but failed to capitalize. Auburn picked up a security goal in the 71st minute when Powers played a Sarah Steinmann corner kick over to Niki Schier for the final goal.

The Tigers outshot Ole Miss 13-6 on the afternoon, and AU goalkeeper Megan Rivera tallied three saves. Rebel Brittany Gillespie turned back five shots in 74 minutes in goal, and Heather Wilemon made her second appearance in the net over the final 16.

"It was a frustrating loss," said UM head coach Steve Holeman. "Set plays was the difference. They scored on two corner kicks, and we had a lack of focus on our corner kicks. They are very organized defensively and made it difficult for us to score.

"We came back strong in the second half and maintained possession for much of the half. But against a team like Auburn, you have to play all 90 minutes."

Ole Miss continues SEC play on the road next weekend with its first action against Eastern Division competition. The Rebels travel to Kentucky for a Friday bout with the Cats at 6:30 p.m. ET, and follow that up with a Sunday match at Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m. CST. The faceoff with the Commodores will be televised regionally by FOX Sports Net.
