LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kelly Renie provided an early lead, and the Ole Miss defense made it stand in a 1-0 soccer road win at Kentucky Friday night. The Rebels' first ever victory over the Wildcats improved them to 11-2-1 overall and 3-2 in SEC play.

"It wasn't pretty," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We played well in the first half, and Kelly Renie scored a great goal. She capitalizes on her opportunities as good goal-scorers do.

"Kentucky put a lot of pressure on us as we knew they would. But we made adjustments and did what we had to do to win. We're thrilled to get our first victory against Kentucky."

The lone score came at 41:18, when Anna Sanders crossed a ball to the left side where Renie headed it in from nine yards out. It was the eighth game-winner and 15th goal of the year for the freshman from Carmel, Ind., tying her for third on the UM single-season list.

The Ole Miss goal capped a first half that saw the Wildcats (7-7, 2-4 SEC) hold a 6-3 shot edge. UK outshot the Rebels again in the second frame and finished with a 17-5 advantage, but the Cats were continually thwarted by an Ole Miss defense led by goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie.

A junior from Modesto, Calif., Gillespie totaled seven saves, including five in the second half, in registering her fifth complete shutout of the season and ninth of her career.

"It was an All-SEC performance by Brittany," Holeman said. "In addition to the saves, she picked off six or seven dangerous crosses. She was a huge part of this win tonight."

The victory was particularly special for four Rebels native to the Bluegrass State. Starters Amy Sample, Kristal Menard and Lindley and Hillary Beckman helped Ole Miss end a five-game skid to UK.

The Rebels wrap up a four-game road swing against Vanderbilt Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CST in Nashville. The UM-VU faceoff will be televised regionally by FOX Sports Net, marking Ole Miss' ninth TV appearance and second straight against the Commodores.
