OXFORD, Miss. - Senior David Sanders scored 20 points and added eight assists to lead the White team to a 67-63 victory over the Red squad in a Thursday night scrimmage at Tad Smith Coliseum. The scrimmage was four 10-minute quarters.
"This was our first time getting on the floor and running a full scrimmage," said Barnes, who is in his fifth year as head coach of the Rebels. "We need some work on taking care of the basketball and also some work on defense. We did some good things on the offensive end, with the exception of the turnovers, and we'll improve on that. Our young kids - Patrick (Fields), Trey (Pearson) and Jonathan (Loe) - competed well.
"I saw some of our players get better. We need some more work, but it's early. I was pleased overall with what I saw tonight."
Senior Derrick Allen added 12 points and seven rebounds for the White team. Freshman Trey Pearson had 12 points for the White.
The junior tandem of Justin Reed and Aaron Harper led the Red squad. Reed scored a team-high 19 points, while Harper had 18 points. Reed and Harper each grabbed eight boards. Sophomore Chris Rhodes led the Red team with nine rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Emmanuel Wade added nine points and five assists for the Red.
The Rebels continue preseason drills Friday. Ole Miss will hold the Rod Barnes Coaching Clinic Saturday at Tad Smith Coliseum from 8:30 a.m. until mid-afternoon.
Ole Miss hosts its first exhibition game Nov. 9 against West Alabama. The Rebels open the regular season Nov. 24 at East Carolina.
