OXFORD, Miss. - Kelly Renie provided a late Ole Miss rally in leading the Rebels to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Arkansas Sunday. Ole Miss rebounds from its first loss of the year to improve to 9-1-1 overall and 1-1 in Southeastern Conference action.
After 77 scoreless minutes, the two SEC West rivals netted three goals in less than seven minutes with Arkansas drawing first blood. One-on-one with the keeper, Lady 'Back Julie Williford connected from the top of the box for her team-high ninth goal of the year and a 1-0 Arkansas lead at 77:11.
Less than four minutes later, Ole Miss cashed in on one of its numerous second-half scoring opportunities. The Rebels outshot the Razorbacks 13-4 after the break, and Renie made one count at the 80:51 mark, booting home a Kristin Chapman cross from 15 yards out to knot the game up.
The redshirt freshman from Carmel, Ind., then launched her sixth game-winner from deep in the 84th minute, targeting the upper corner of the net from 23 yards on the right side. It marks the fourth multiple-goal performance of the season for Renie, whose 12 goals is among the tops in the nation.
Ole Miss finished the afternoon with a 22-9 shot edge but six offsides calls. Goalkeeper Lindsay Haywood totaled six saves in the losing effort for Arkansas, who drops to 4-9-0, and 0-2 in the conference.
The Rebels have won six straight against the Lady 'Backs, and five by a 2-1 score.
"It seems like every time we play Arkansas it comes down to the final minutes, but we've been fortunate enough to pull away with the win," said UM head coach Steve Holeman. "Unfortunately we've been finding ourselves trailing late in the game too many times this year, but this is how we respond. A lot of teams would drop their heads and quit, but we didn't and I'm proud of our team for that.
"When you have five breakaways and one penalty kick, you should be able to score. If there's anything we can take away from this game, it's that we have to take advantage of our opportunities."
Ole Miss, whose undefeated start ended Friday to LSU, 2-1, continues SEC play next weekend in a tour through Alabama. The Rebels face off with the Crimson Tide Friday at 7 p.m. CST in Tuscaloosa, and follows up with a Sunday meeting with the Auburn Tigers at 1 p.m. on the Plains.
