Gunn's 16 Points Paces Rebels Past Hornets

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior John Gunn scored 16 points, on 8-of-11 shooting, as Ole Miss defeated visiting Alabama State, 74-58, in its home opener Wednesday night in front of 3,392 at the Tad Smith Coliseum.
Gunn was one of four Rebels (1-1) in double figures. Senior David Sanders scored 13 points and juniors Aaron Harper and Justin Reed added 12 points each.
Ole Miss led 32-30 at the break, as Alabama State (0-4) stayed within five of the Rebels until early in the second half. Ole Miss then used a 9-0 run to break open a 41-36 game and go up 50-36 with 13:39 remaining. Reed's free throw to complete a three-point play capped the spurt.
The Hornets would never get closer than 12 the rest of the way, and the Rebels would lead by as many as 23.
The Rebels were 57.1 percent from the field, making 28-of-49 shots. Ole Miss shot 65.2 percent in the second half, connecting on 15-of-23 attempts.
Alabama State was limited to 39.0 percent from the field, hitting on 23-of-59 shots.
Reed also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as Ole Miss held a 36-28 advantage on the boards.
Junior guard Lamar Clark led the Hornets with 15 points. Freshman guard Cedric Mitchell added 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, senior center Alvin Pettway had 13 points and six boards.
Ole Miss will next travel to Fairfax, Va., for a non-conference game at George Mason, Saturday at 6:00 p.m., CST. The Rebels next home game will be Wednesday, Dec. 4 against Austin Peay.
