OXFORD, Miss. - Sunday's Ole Miss-Memphis soccer match has been cancelled due to wet and rainy conditions in the Oxford area.
While both coaching staffs wanted the contest to take place, the field was ruled unplayable, according to Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. The game will not be rescheduled, and both teams end their regular season and now prepare for postseason.
With a 13-3-2 overall record, the Rebels finish the regular season with their best winning percentage ever (.778) and are now only one victory shy of matching their highest single-season win total.
Ole Miss also achieved its highest overall SEC regular-season finish at third and equaled its best league record at 5-3-1. The Rebels will be the No. 3 seed as well as the host of the 2002 SEC Championship, this Thursday through Sunday at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. Thursday's opening-round games begin at 11:30 a.m. CST, and UM will play at 7:30 p.m. against either LSU or Kentucky, depending on the result of Sunday's Arkansas/LSU match.
Ole Miss is making its sixth straight SEC Tournament appearance - the longest streak of any Western Division team. Ole Miss, who matched its highest national ranking this week at 28th in the NSCAA poll, is coming off a 4-1 route of Mississippi State Friday in Starkville. Amy Sample (3), Kristal Menard (2), Kelly Renie (18) and Leigh Barrow (1) all netted goals against the in-state rival.
Memphis (9-9-1, 5-5 C-USA) defeated Tulane 4-0 Friday, and the Lady Tigers now await the outcome of the Tulane-Houston match Sunday to see if the team qualifies for the Conference USA Tournament.
