OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss senior forward Derrick Allen led three players in double figures with 16 points to lift the Red team to an 83-59 victory over the White squad in Monday's intra-squad scrimmage. It was the Rebels' last scrimmage before Saturday's exhibition game against West Alabama. Game time for the men's exhibition is 1:00 p.m. (CT) at Tad Smith Coliseum.
Allen also grabbed 6 rebounds for the Red team. Redshirt freshman Jonathan Loe and junior Aaron Harper were the other two players in double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Harper and sophomore Kendrick Fox led the Red squad with 7 boards apiece.
"We had some young kids step up and play well," said fifth-year head coach Rod Barnes. "For the most part, we were good offensively, and at times, we were good on the defensive end. But, we need to be more consistent."
The White squad also had three players in double figures with senior David Sanders leading the way with 15 points. Junior Justin Reed added 14 points, while junior John Gunn had 11 points and a team-high 6 rebounds. Sanders dished out 5 assists.
"The White team got away from what we wanted to do," Barnes said. "They were not being selfish, but they were not working within our offense. As a result, it gave the Red team some easy baskets with turnovers and long rebounds.
"We have to work on our defense and shot selection. We took some shots tonight that were not great shots, and that's what we want to take. Tonight was our first scrimmage in front of our fans. Sometimes players can get excited about playing in front of a crowd for the first time. Overall, it was a good scrimmage for us."
Following Saturday's exhibition, Ole Miss hosts its second preseason exhibition contest Nov. 16 versus Athletes In Action. The Rebels will open regular-season play Nov. 24 at East Carolina.
