Ole Miss to Host SEC Soccer Tournament This Week

OXFORD, Miss. - Some of the nation's top collegiate women's soccer teams will be on display this week in Oxford, as Ole Miss hosts the 2002 Southeastern Conference Soccer Championship, Thursday through Sunday at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

The SEC's top eight teams from the regular season see action on Thursday's opening-round, four-game slate, which begins at 11:30 a.m. CST. The four winners advance to Friday's semifinal games at 5 and 7:30 p.m.

The tournament championship game is Sunday at 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on SEC-TV/FOX Sports Net.

"We're thrilled to have the tournament here at Ole Miss in the final year before it goes to neutral sites," said Lynnette Johnson, Ole Miss Senior Associate Athletic Director/Senior Women's Administrator. "This is a great chance to showcase our University, our program and our newly-renovated facilities."

Claiming its first regular-season conference crown and the tournament's No. 1 seed, Auburn (14-3-2, 6-1-2 SEC) opens the event Thursday at 11:30 a.m. against No. 8 LSU (11-4-3, 2-3-3 SEC). The Tigers' 14 wins was a league high and broke the AU single-season record.

Game two features No. 4 seed Florida (8-9-2, 5-3-1 SEC) against No. 5 South Carolina (13-5-2, 4-3-2 SEC) at 2 p.m. The Gators are the six-time defending tournament champions.

Tennessee (13-5-1, 6-2-1 SEC) earned its first SEC East title this year and its highest tournament seed at No. 2. The Lady Vols match up with No. 7 Georgia (8-10-1, 4-5 SEC) at 5 p.m.

A first-time SEC Tournament host, Ole Miss (13-3-2, 5-3-1 SEC) is enjoying its best season ever, finishing top three in the overall conference standings for the first time. The No. 3 seed Rebels play the finale Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against No. 6 Kentucky (10-7, 4-4 SEC).

The winners of games one and two match up in the semifinals Friday at 5 p.m., while the game three and four winners take the 7:30 slot.

Single-day admission is $5 for adults and $3 for those 17 and under. Admission is free for children under two and students of participating SEC schools (valid student ID required).
