OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team has been honored as one of the nation's best in the classroom as well as the playing field, having received the NSCAA Team Academic Award.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America honors clubs that achieved a 3.0 grade point average or higher as a team during the 2001-02 academic year. The Rebels accumulated a 3.48 GPA, which ranked 12th among the 213 women's programs to earn the distinction. UM was fifth out of the Division I schools.
Among those contributing to the squad's impressive academics are sophomores Ramey Rush and Leigh Barrow and senior Kristin Chapman, who were all named Verizon Academic All-District in November. Barrow was also one of five Rebels to register a perfect 4.00 last year.
Ole Miss nabbed the NSCAA Award for the 2000-01 year as well after posting 3.53 team GPA, which was fourth out of 177 honorees.
The Rebels recently wrapped up the their finest season as a program, capping it with their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance. With a 13-5-2 record, Ole Miss registered its best single-season winning percentage (.700) and finished top three in the SEC overall standings for the first time.
