BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Justin Reed, a sophomore on the Ole Miss men's basketball team, was named to the All-Southeastern Conference second team, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The All-SEC teams were voted on by the league's coaches.
"Justin had another outstanding season, and is very deserving of this honor," Rebel head coach Rod Barnes said. "This is also an award for his teammates because they helped push him to become the best he can be. He is one of the hardest workers on the squad, and it's nice to see hard work rewarded."
Reed, who was the 2001 SEC Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, leads the Rebels in scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounding (6.8 rpg). He is shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 78.1 percent from the foul line, and his free throw shooting improvement (54.9 percent in 2000-01, 78.1 percent this year) is the biggest in the nation. A 2001 Associated Press All-SEC third team pick, Reed recorded seven double-doubles this season, including four in the month of February. Since Feb. 2, the 6-foot-8 forward is averaging 15.3 points and 8.4 boards. He is ranked among the SEC leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and free throw percentage.
Earlier this year, Reed was named to the BP Top of the World Classic All-Tournament Team and earned Sierra Providence SunClassic MVP honors. He was named SEC Player of the Week for Dec. 3-10.
Joining Reed on the second team were Florida's Matt Bonner and Brett Nelson, LSU's Ronald Dupree, Mississippi State's Mario Austin and Tennessee' Marcus Haislip.
Alabama swept the league's postseason accolades with Mark Gottfried named Coach of the Year, Erwin Dudley Player of the Year and Maurice Williams Freshman of the Year.
The Rebels (20-9, 9-7 SEC) return to action Thursday, Mar. 7 against South Carolina in the first round of the SEC Tournament. Game time is 8:45 p.m. (CT), and the contest will be televised by Jefferson Pilot.
