Ballard, Stockton Earn Academic All-SEC Honors

OXFORD, Miss. - Misty Ballard and Maranda Stockton, both members of the Ole Miss rifle team have been named as 2001-02 Academic All-SEC selections for their efforts in the classroom.

"I am so proud of what these young ladies have been able to accomplish in the classroom as well as on the firing range," said head coach Valerie Boothe. "Both of these young women have done a lot to make Ole Miss proud and exemplify what it means to be a student-athlete on the Division I level."

Misty Ballard, a senior on the 2001-02 squad, posted excellent marks in the classroom as she has repeatedly earned recognition for her academic efforts. Ballard majored in Pharmacy with a 3.50 GPA. Throughout her career, the Glenn, Miss., native has been named to the Dean's Honor Roll and UMAA Honor roll repeatedly and was recently named as a recipient of the All-Academic Collegiate Coaches award as selected by rifle coaches across the country. In competition, Ballard posted a career high score of 1142 in the smallbore at the GARC tournament this past season and led the team with an376.8 average in air rifle and an 1123.1 average in smallbore.

Maranda Stockton


Stockton served the 2001-02 season as the team captain as a junior and will return to the leading post as a junior next year. The Livingston, Tenn., native has also earned high marks in the classroom as well as on the firing range. Stockton has posted a 3.78 GPA in two years while majoring in Psychology at Ole Miss. She earned a spot on the Chancellor's Honor Roll twice, as well as the Dean's Honor roll two times in her two years at Ole Miss. The sophomore also earned the All-Academic Collegiate Coaches award and was named to the Verizon Academic-All-District VI second team in 2002. This is the second time Stockton has been named Academic All-SEC. In competition, she posted averages of 374.2 in air rifle and a 1091.3 in smallbore for the season.

"It's exciting to see our young ladies excel on the field of competition as well as in the classroom, and that's exactly what these two young women have done in their time at Ole Miss," said Lynnette Johnson, Associate Athletic Director for Women's Athletics. "Misty and Maranda have demonstrated leadership for their team on the firing range and in the classroom. They have set a standard for other student-athletes at Ole Miss with their accomplishments."

To be eligible for Academic All-SEC selection an athlete must 1) have a 3.0 GPA for either the past year or for their career; 2) be a sophomore or higher in academic classification; and 3) have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2001-2 Non-Championship Sponsored Sports Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2000-01 academic calendar.
