OXFORD, Miss. - Kelly Renie connected on her first two collegiate goals to open the 2002 Ole Miss soccer season with a 2-0 victory over Marshall Friday night at the Ole Miss Invitational.

After redshirting last season with a torn ACL, Renie made her official Rebel debut a spectacular one. The Carmel, Ind., native netted her first score at the 17:49 mark, heading in a Brittney Potts cross from just in front.

Renie blasted in her second goal in the 41st minute as touch-passing from the Beckman sisters - Lindley and Hillary - set up the freshman forward 16 yards out for a 2-0 halftime lead that stood for the final.

"Kelly Renie scored two great goals," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "We are getting a lot of team contributions from our freshmen. It's exciting and also a great feeling to know that we have that much youth helping our team succeed."

The Rebel defense held the Thundering Herd without a shot in the first half and finished with a 10-4 edge. Brittany Gillespie, a junior from Modesto, Calif., totaled three saves and now boasts 4.5 shutouts for her career.

"To be as organized as we were defensively really says something about how far this team has come in a short period of time," Holeman said. "Marshall is a quality team that came into the game very organized defensively. For us to come into the first game of the year and not only win but shut them out was a big statement."

The Ole Miss Invitational wraps up Sunday with the Rebels (1-0) facing off with Georgia State (1-0) at 1 p.m. CST, preceded by Southern Miss (0-1) and Marshall (0-1) at 10:30 a.m.

GSU was a 2-1 victor over Southern in the early game Friday. After surrendering a score in the first two minutes, the Lady Panthers rallied late with a pair of goals in the 79th minute. Lindsey Griffin assisted on the first goal and then fired home the game-winner to put Georgia State in contention with the Rebels for the tournament title on Sunday.
