OXFORD, Miss. - The freshmen provided the offense again as a pair of newcomers netted goals for Ole Miss Sunday in a 3-2 victory over Georgia State. The win gave the Rebels a perfect 2-0 weekend and first place in the four-team Ole Miss Invitational.

Inside the final 15 minutes of a 2-2 tie, rookie UM defender Lyndsey Williams booted in her first career goal for the game-winner from five yards away, following nice passing from fellow freshmen Hillary Beckman and Kelly Renie.

It was the second assist of the weekend for Beckman and the second of the day for Renie, who also netted both Rebel goals in Friday's season-opening shutout of Marshall. Renie nabbed Tournament MVP honors.

"I think our freshmen are proving why they were a nationally-ranked top 50 recruiting class," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Rankings don't really mean a whole lot, but they stepped on the field and showed that they have made an impact on our team.

"If you saw Lyndsey play on Friday, you know she doesn't play like a freshman. Today was just a ball loose in the box and she had the composure to turn and bury it in the back of the net."

Georgia State (1-1) struck first on the afternoon, connecting on their first shot of the game at the 31:17 mark. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Brooks Daniel ripped a shot from 10 yards away - one of three goals on the weekend for Daniel.

With three minutes remaining in the first half, sophomore Lindley Beckman, who was named to the All-Tournament team, put the Rebels on the scoreboard with a blast from the left top of the box to the right corner of the net. Ole Miss took its first lead at 49:50 when freshman Brittney Potts scored her first official goal as a Rebel, finishing off touch-passing by Renie and Anna Sanders.

However, the Lady Panthers responded in the 68th minute when Ole Miss' Williams headed a ball that went over UM goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie, and Daniel came in behind for the GSU score. Williams would later redeem herself with the go-ahead goal for the Rebels, who outshot State 18-6 with a 6-2 edge on corner kicks.

"We created a lot of opportunities," Holeman said. "That's still one of the things we need to work on is just finishing our opportunities and having a better goal-to-shot ratio.

"Georgia State was very opportunistic. They capitalized when we made a few defensive mistakes. They finished their opportunities and that's what good programs do. I know they're going to be successful this year."

Joining Renie and Beckman on the All-Tournament for the Rebels were sophomores Kristal Menard and Ramey Rush. Ole Miss wins its fourth consecutive regular-season tournament, and begins the year with two straight victories for only the third time in program history and first since 1999.

The Rebels continue their season-opening four-game homestand with Kansas and Northeastern in Oxford next weekend. Ole Miss faces the Jayhawks Friday at 7 p.m. CST and the Huskies Sunday at 1 at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
