COLUMBIA, Mo. - Ole Miss notched a pivotal non-conference road win Sunday, knocking off Missouri in overtime, 2-1, off Amy Sample's game-winner in the first minute of OT. At 7-0-1, the Rebels stand as the only undefeated in the Southeastern Conference.
"This is the biggest non-conference win we've ever had," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Everyone on this team stepped up today. Missouri is a great team that should be ranked in the top 25. This was a huge win today."
Karen Hall continued her weekend rampage, scoring Ole Miss' first goal at 19:08 off an Anna Sanders assist, and later sending a pass through the defense for Sample's go-ahead score. The sophomore from Southlake, Texas, recorded three goals and a pair of assists, both on game-winners, on the weekend.
The Rebels took an early 1-0 lead and made it stand until the 75th minute, when the Tigers (5-2-1) responded with a Jennifer Nobis tying goal. The contest would remain knotted until Sample, a junior from Crestwood, Ky., registered her fourth career game-winner at the 90:40 mark.
Mizzou, who entered the weekend ranked three spots ahead of the Rebels in the Central Region in fifth, finished the game with an 18-16 advantage on shots. Junior Brittany Gillespie tallied six saves in earning the victory in goal for Ole Miss, who is off to its best start in school history.
Before opening SEC action, the Rebels face one more non-conference test in Samford, Friday at 6 p.m. CST at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. UM begins league play Oct. 4 against LSU in Oxford, with Arkansas following on Oct. 6.
