Rebel Tennis Has Strong Performance At Fluitt Invitational Friday

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Senior Alex Hartman won his first match of the fall season to pace the Ole Miss men's tennis team at the 2002 Charles Fluitt Invitational, hosted by the University of Kentucky. The invitational was held at Hilary J. Boon Indoor Tennis Center and the Kentucky Tennis Academy.
Hartman, ranked No. 19 in the nation, missed last week's tournament at Middle Tennessee with an injury, but returned to form Friday in ranked flight action. The senior posted a 6-4, 7-5 win over Alabama's Maim Belski.
Catalin Gard, Paul Ciorascu and Claes Lindholm also competed in the ranked flight and all came away with two victories Friday. Gard, ranked No. 67 in the nation, earned wins over Kentucky's Karim Benmansour, 6-2, 6-1 and Vanderbilt's Matthew Lockin, 6-1, 6-4. Ciorascu, ranked 69th, had wins over Vanderbilt's Scott Brown, 7-5, 7-5 and Tulane's Victor Romero, 6-3, 6-3. Lindholm defeated Kentucky's Matt Emery, 6-3, 6-2 and Brown, 6-4, 6-4.
This weekend's action included a ranked flight and two singles flights. The ranked flight is made up of players currently ranked in the top 100 ITA rankings, as well as those ranked at some point in their career. All players in the ranked flight will play a round robin of five matches over the three days.
In the Flight B singles, freshman David Donaldson fell to Morehead State's Tomi Simola, 6-2, 6-3.
The Rebels continue play Saturday at the Charles Fluitt Invitational. Hartman, Gard, Ciorascu and Lindholm each will play two matches in the ranked flight Saturday, while Donaldson will meet Eastern Kentucky's Brian Stephenson in the consolation side of the Flight B bracket.
