OXFORD, Miss. - Kelly Renie notched her second two-goal game of the year, and Kristin Chapman picked up the first of her career in the Rebels' 5-0 beating of Northeastern Sunday at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The Rebels continue their best start since 1999 with a perfect 4-0 mark.
Renie, a freshman from Carmel, Ind., netted her first score at the 20:06 mark from the left top of the box after a pass from Leigh Barrow. Renie connected from nearly the same spot five minutes later for her team-high fourth goal of the year, with Barrow and Amy Sample earning assists.
Chapman, a two-time All-SEC senior from Vicksburg, Miss., ripped her first goal of the year in the 37th minute off a penalty kick. After an own goal gave Ole Miss a comfortable 4-0 lead at halftime, Chapman headed in her second score in the 61st minute off a cross from Anna Sanders.
The Rebel defense registered its second straight shutout and third of the year, holding the Huskies (0-2-2) without a shot in the first half. Ole Miss finished with a 23-4 edge on shots, with only two NU attempts on goal.
Junior goalkeepers Brittany Gillespie and Heather Wilemon combined on the shutout, and Wilemon recorded a pair of saves in her first appearance of 2002.
"It was a great team effort," said UM head coach Steve Holeman. "The first half could have been our best first half of the year. We outshot them 14-0, and we were creative to get in behind an organized defense and score four great goals. They weren't easy goals for us, but Renie and Chapman are very opportunistic."
Every healthy Rebel in uniform saw playing time, as Ole Miss deals with the loss of freshman starting forward Brittney Potts, who tore her ACL in Friday's 1-0 victory over Kansas.
"As soon as we lost Potts, we started wondering who can step in her role and make plays," Holeman said. "One of the things we have to do is play everybody on our bench, and everyone that stepped on the field contributed and did very well. They played with a lot of composure, and they were a big part of our success.
"We also were able to push Chapman up top like she did some last spring, and she was very explosive for us. We know that with the absence of Potts, we have players who can be effective for us."
The Rebels begin a four-game road swing next weekend. Ole Miss travels to Wyoming Friday for a 4:30 MT match, and then to Colorado on Sunday for a 1 p.m. MT game.
