Rebels Take Second At Ole Miss Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss rifle team turned in a second place finish at the Ole Miss Invitational, firing a combined score of 4463 in smallbore and a 1517 in air rifle for a total of 5980 at the event.
The Rebels were edged by UTEP, who fired a combined score of 4503-1531-6034.
"We had our chances and we didn't make the shots we needed this weekend," said head coach Valerie Boothe. "We have some things to go back and work on, and that's what we're doing. We need to get the little things corrected now before we hit our conference matches."
Shanda Duval led the way for Ole Miss in the smallbore portion of the competition, firing an 1138 for a fifth-place finish, while Megan Sandage turned in a score of 1129 to finish second on the team and eighth overall. Laura Gavin fired an 1119 over the weekend, while Mara Polonsky shot a 1081 to round out the scoring for the Rebels.
Jennifer Lorenzen, who was competing as an individual in the meet, finished second overall in the final standings with a score of 1148. Jessica McClain also competed as an individual and finished with a score of 1052.
In air rifle, the Rebels finished behind UTEP as well, with Polonsky leading the way with a score of 385 to take fourth-place overall. Sandage turned in the second-best score on the team, firing a 381, while Duval scored a 379. Gavin scored a 372 to close out the scoring.
Competing as individuals for Ole Miss were Lorenzen and McClain. Lorenzen finished with a score of 378, while McClain turned in a score of 374.
The event was shot over two weekends, with the final results being compiled once all teams had shot.
Ole Miss will return to action against UT-Martin on Saturday, October 11.
