OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss faces its first outside competition of the 2003-04 basketball season Tuesday, hosting Southeastern All-Stars in the Rebels' first of two exhibition games. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT at Tad Smith Coliseum.
Ole Miss enjoyed a productive scrimmage on Wednesday with seniors Justin Reed and Aaron Harper leading the way. Reed, who earned Preseason All-SEC honors, tallied 26 points and 10 rebounds, while Harper dropped in 19 points and knocked down a pair of three-pointers.
Reed and Harper are two of seven returnees for the Rebels, who also add seven new faces in Rod Barnes' sixth year at the helm. Barnes, the 2001 Naismith National Coach of the Year, has guided the Rebels to 100 win over the past five years, the most victories in a five-year span in school history.
"We're all excited to get the new season started," Barnes said. "It will be this group's first time together as a team. Having so many new guys, we're anxious to see where we are. We plan to play a lot of people."
The Atlanta-based Southeastern All-Stars squad is comprised of former collegiate standouts, and faced it first competition as a team Monday at Georgia Tech. Among the All-Stars is former Georgia forward Adrian Jones, who lettered with the Bulldogs 1997-2001.
Ole Miss continues preseason play with Carson Newman Sunday at 2 p.m. in Oxford. The Rebels officially open the new campaign against Arkansas State, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. at Tad Smith Coliseum.
