OXFORD, Miss. - Senior forward Justin Reed scored 26 points for the White, but senior forward Aaron Harper had 19 points to lead the Blue team to a 49-47 win in Ole Miss' intra-squad scrimmage Wednesday evening inside the Tad Smith Coliseum.
"I thought the first 10-15 minutes of the scrimmage we're good," said sixth-year head coach Rod Barnes. "Then we started to get a little tired and a little sloppy. Overall, I thought the effort was there.
"When you don't have all your best guys playing on the same team, you're going to struggle. I thought we struggled mostly with our scoring and with turnovers, but again, when you mix-up the teams that's going to happen."
Reed made 11-of-24 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. He also grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
Harper was 8-of-14 shooting and made two three pointers. He also had four boards, one assist and one blocked shot.
Other notable performances included freshman guard Todd Abernethy, who recorded eight assists and three steals while scoring five points. Junior guard Ed Glass scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and had four assists, and junior forward Chris Rhodes grabbed nine boards.
"In a scrimmage like this, you try to look at guys and see how they'll fit into a game situation," Barnes said. "Most of the time in practice we stop to correct and teach things. Here, we were looking to see, can this guy play through mistakes and can he help other players through mistakes."
The Rebels are scheduled to play their first of two exhibition games Tuesday at 7 p.m., when they host the Southeastern All-Stars. Ole Miss will then host Carson Newman College on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m., in its final exhibition before opening the season on Friday, Nov. 21 against Arkansas State.
