OXFORD, Miss. - After stacking up All-SEC and All-Region honors for her on-the-field attributes, Ole Miss soccer player Kristal Menard has been recognized for her effort in the classroom as well, earning NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America accolades.
The junior from Crestwood, Ky., garnered second team honors after posting a 3.6 GPA in Marketing, this while being one the top center midfielders in the nation. This season, Menard turned in three multiple-assist games and a pair of multiple-goal outings and ranked top 10 in the SEC in total points (22). She was named NSCAA All-Central Region and All-SEC first team for the second straight year.
The NSCAA Scholar award was not the first academic prize for Menard, who was one of five Rebels to take home CoSIDA Academic All-Region honors. She also joins Lindley Beckman and Amy Sample as 2003 All-Americans and gives head coach Steve Holeman six Academic All-America selections in the program's history. Ole Miss was also an NSCAA Team Academic Award recipient for the third straight year.
To qualify for the NSCAA Scholar All-America award, a player must be at least a junior in academic standing (in the second year of attendance at the school if a transfer student), have a minimum of a 3.30 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale), start more than 50 percent of the time and be a significant contributor to the team's success.
Ole Miss is fresh off its most successful season as a program in the fall, earning its second consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and advancing to the second round with an opening win over Texas. With a 15-6-2 mark, the Rebels totaled their most single-season victories and finished top four in the SEC overall for the second straight year.
