OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - OLE MISS' JUSTIN REED AND AARON HARPER NAMED TO NABC ALL-DISTRICT TEAM
Justin Reed and Aaron Harper, both juniors on the Ole Miss Rebel basketball squad, have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 6 second team, the organization announced Wednesday. This is the second-straight year Reed has received the honor, while it is Harper's first.
Joining Reed and Harper on the second team were Alabama's Maurice Williams, Georgia's Ezra Williams and Auburn's Marquis Daniels.
One of the nation's top three-point shooters, Harper is hitting 42.7 percent from the arc. The Jackson, Miss., native is averaging 13.4 points and 4.3 boards, while shooting 45.8 percent from the field and 74.6 percent from the foul line. Ranked among the Southeastern Conference leaders in scoring and three-point field goal percentage, Harper was named the league's Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 20-26. During that week, the 6-foot-7 forward/guard averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in the Rebels' two victories over No. 15/No. 13 Alabama Jan. 21 and Arkansas Jan. 25. He scored a career-high 28 points in the win over Alabama.
Reed, a two-time Wooden Award candidate, leads the Rebel squad in scoring (14.6 ppg), rebounding (5.9 rpg), field goal percentage (49.6) and blocked shots (26) and is ranked among the league's statistical leaders in all four categories. Earlier this season, the 6-foot-8 forward joined the Rebel 1,000-point club and is in the 20th spot on the Ole Miss career scoring chart with 1,144 points. The Jackson, Miss., native also has 533 career rebounds and is only the 12th player in Ole Miss history to have 1,000 points and 500 boards. He tied a career high scoring with 26 points versus Vanderbilt Feb. 1.
Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across the country. The 150 student-athletes, from 15 districts, are now eligible for the NABC Division I All-American Team to be announced at the conclusion of the 2002-03 NCAA men's basketball season.
The NABC District 6 first team members were Matt Bonner (Florida), Jarvis Hayes (Georgia), Mario Austin (Mississippi State), Darius Rice (Miami) and Erwin Dudley (Alabama).
The Rebels (12-10, 3-8 SEC) return to action Saturday, Feb. 22 when they host Auburn (17-6, 6-4 SEC). The game, which is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. (CT) start, will be televised by FOX Sports Net South.
