OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team, who moved up to No. 5 in the latest national rankings Wednesday, will host Troy State Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gillom Sports Center. The Rebels come into the match at 1-0, while Troy State is currently 0-3.
"It will be good for us to get another match under our belts prior to the Mississippi Cup next Thursday," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "We are off to an excellent start in 2003 as evidenced by our top five national ranking, and we look forward to continuing our success. We encourage all fans to come out Sunday and support the Rebels. This is an exciting team to watch."
The Rebels dominated No. 21 South Florida 7-0 to begin the 2003 season. Ole Miss took command early by winning the doubles point and never let up. The Rebels are led by senior Alex Hartman, who is off to a great start this spring. Ranked No. 24 in the nation, Hartman advanced to the semifinals at the SEC Indoor Championships, and then followed that up with a shutout over USF's No. 1 player.
Troy State lost to Clemson 7-0 to open the season and then dropped a 6-1 decision to Georgia Tech and a 6-0 decision to Alabama. The Trojans played at Auburn on Thursday and then travel to Pensacola, Fla., to meet Division II power West Florida on Friday. Troy State is led by senior Pablo Martinez, who is ranked No. 87 in the nation in singles.
