OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 5 nationally-ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team downed Troy State 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center in its final tuneup before battling Mississippi State in the Mississippi Cup Thursday.

The Rebels (2-0) won the opening doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Ole Miss won convincingly at No. 2 doubles, 8-1 and Troy State (0-4) took the match on court three, 8-4. The Rebels held off the Trojans 8-6 at No. 1 for the point.

Rebel junior Paul Ciorascu improved to 19-8 on the year with his win over TSU's Rolando Vargas at No. 3 singles. Ciorascu won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(6) and then shutout Vargas 6-0 in the second to make it 2-0 Rebels.

Sophomore Catalin Gard put Ole Miss up 3-0 by defeating Daniel Quinceno 7-5, 6-2 on court two. Senior Alex Hartman, ranked No. 24 in the nation, split sets with 87th-ranked Pablo Martinez in the No. 1 match. Hartman won the first set 6-2, and then Martinez rallied to take the second set 6-4. Hartman got up early in the third and never let up taking it 6-2 to clinch the win for the Rebels.

Karim Alayli added to the overall score with his 6-0, 6-1 win over Trojan Andrew Waters at No. 5 singles. Claes Lindholm downed Robert van Swelm 6-2, 6-2 on court four to make it 6-0 Ole Miss.

Troy State's only point of the day came after the match was decided, when Clayton Langheim outlasted redshirt freshmanDavid Donaldson 6-3, 6-7(6), 1-0 (14-12) at No. 6 singles. Donaldson was playing his first career dual match.

"This was a good test for us before we play Mississippi State on Thursday," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "I am proud of the team's effort today. Troy State is a well-coached team. Eric Hayes has been the head coach at South Florida and most recently at North Carolina State. We knew they would be ready to play, and our guys responded to the challenge."

The Rebels will now get ready to race their arch-rival and 24th-ranked, Mississippi State in the sixth Mississippi Cup Thursday night in Jackson, Miss. The match will begin at 5 p.m. at the River Hills Club. To order tickets call (601) 987-4438.
