ATLANTA, Ga. - Justin Reed, a junior on the Ole Miss men's basketball team, was named to the Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference third team, as voted on by members of the media. It is the third-consecutive year that Reed has received the honor.
Joining Reed on the team were Mississippi State's Timmy Bowers and Derrick Zimmerman, Vanderbilt's Matt Freije and Alabama's Maurice Williams.
A 2002 and 2003 Wooden Award candidate, Reed leads the Rebels in scoring (14.8 ppg), rebounding (5.6 rpg), field goal percentage (48.8) and blocked shots (27). He finished the regular season ranked among the SEC leaders in scoring, rebounding and field goal percentage. Earlier this year, Reed was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District VI second team.
The 6-foot-8 forward posted two double-doubles this year and had four games in which he scored 20 points or more, including a career-high tying 26 points versus Vanderbilt Feb. 1. The Jackson, Miss., native also reached the 1,000-point milestone this season, and is one of only nine players in Ole Miss history to have 1,200 points and 550 rebounds. Reed enters SEC Tournament play with 1,224 points and 555 boards.
The All-SEC first team members were Tennessee's Ron Slay, Kentucky's Keith Bogans, Georgia's Jarvis Hayes, Mississippi State's Mario Austin and Florida's Matt Bonner. Making the league's second team were Georgia's Ezra Williams, Alabama's Erwin Dudley, Auburn's Marquis Daniels, LSU's Ronald Dupree and Kentucky's Marquis Estill.
Slay was named the league's Player of the Year, while Wildcat head coach Tubby Smith was selected Coach of the Year. Florida's Anthony Roberson earned the Newcomer of the Year award.
The Rebels (13-14) open play in the league's postseason tournament Thursday, Mar. 13 against South Carolina (12-15).
