OXFORD, Miss. - Marvin Moore, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound forward from Birmingham, Ala., has signed a national letter of intent to attend Ole Miss beginning in the fall of 2003, Rebel head coach Rod Barnes announced Friday. Moore is a junior college transfer from Southern Union State Community College in Wadley, Ala.
Moore is the second signee for the Rebels in the late signing period, which began April 16 and runs through May 15. Moore joins Byron Burnett, Bam Doyne and Ed Glass as members of Ole Miss' 2003 signing class. Burnett and Doyne signed with the Rebels during the early signing period in November, while Glass was Ole Miss' first signee of the spring period.
"Marvin is a great kid who has tremendous athletic ability," said Barnes, who will begin his sixth season at the helm of the Rebel program in 2003-04. "We are happy Marvin is going to be a part of the Ole Miss basketball family. Marvin is a combo-forward, and his versatility will allow us to play him at either forward position. We feel Marvin will address our needs up front, particularly on the boards.
"Marvin has shown a lot of interest in Ole Miss the past two years, and we feel that his commitment to this program will be a major asset. Playing for head coach Ron Radford at Southern Union the last two years, we know that Marvin will be prepared when he arrives at Ole Miss. Marvin's adjustment period will not be long because of playing in a disciplined program under Coach Radford."
During his sophomore season with the Bison in 2002-03, Moore averaged 23.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He finished the year ranked seventh in the nation in scoring and 15th in the country in rebounding. Following the season, Moore was named to the All-Region 22 Team. Southern Union finished with an 18-15 record this past year.
The Rebels completed the 2002-03 campaign with a 14-15 overall mark.
