OXFORD, Miss. - Tommie Eddie, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., has signed a national letter of intent to attend Ole Miss beginning in the fall of 2003, Rebel head coach Rod Barnes announced Tuesday. Eddie is a junior college transfer from Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.
Eddie is the fourth signee for the Rebels in the late signing period, which began April 16 and runs through May 15. Eddie joins Todd Abernethy, Byron Burnett, Bam Doyne, Ed Glass and Marvin Moore as members of Ole Miss' 2003 signing class. Burnett and Doyne signed with the Rebels during the early signing period, while Abernethy, Glass and Moore inked with Ole Miss in the spring signing period.
"We're excited to have Tommie be a part of our program," said Barnes. "Tommie is a wide-body, strong kid who has tremendous skills for his size. We feel he can be an impact player for us in the post next year. Tommie's size and strength will add depth to our frontline.
"Tommie is a well-rounded, likeable person that we feel will make a quick adjustment to the Division I level. Tommie comes to us from a basketball program at Coffeyville Community College that made the national tournament last year, and Tommie was the anchor of that squad. Coach (Jay) Herkelman has done a great job in preparing Tommie for this level. We're fortunate to get a player, like Tommie, from such a tremendous program as the one Coach Herkelman has built at Coffeyville. We expect that Tommie will bring that same winning attitude here."
As a sophomore at Coffeyville last year, Eddie averaged 14.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in helping the Ravens to a 29-9 record, a Region 6 title and an eighth-place finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Tournament. He earned Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference All-Conference first team honors, and also received NJCAA Region 6 honorable mention distinction.
Eddie recorded averages of 10.9 points and 5.1 rebounds as a freshman in 2001-02. Coffeyville posted a 30-2 record, won the Region 6 crown and finished as national runner-up in the NJCAA Tournament. Eddie played his prep basketball at Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn.
The Rebels completed the 2002-03 season with a 14-15 overall record.
