OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss' Alex Hartman has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, as announced by the league office. Hartman was awarded the honor based on his play this past week in leading the Rebels to their second straight SEC Western Division Championship.
Hartman, ranked No. 15 in singles and No. 11 in doubles, went 2-0 in singles posting straight-set wins over Aleksey Bubis of Arkansas to lead Ole Miss to a 7-0 win against the Razorbacks and the SEC West title. On Sunday, he defeated LSU's Jason Hazley 7-5, 7-5 as the Rebels downed the Tigers 5-1. His doubles match on Friday was suspended once Ole Miss clinched the point, and doubles was not contested against LSU.
"This award is particularly noteworthy, because the SEC is regarded as the strongest conference in the nation," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "Alex played exceptionally well this past weekend, leading us to wins over Arkansas and LSU. His consistent play all spring has been instrumental in our claiming the SEC West Championship."
With his two wins over the weekend, Hartman has now totaled 102 singles victories. He became the second Rebel to win 100 career matches, with his defeat of Georgia's Bo Hodge two weekends ago. Hartman also became the second winningest player in the history of the program, behind former All-American Johan Hede, who won 135 matches.
Hartman is one of three Rebels to earn the SEC's weekly award since the league initiated it for the sport of tennis in 2000. Former All-American James Shortall earned this distinction in 2000, and two-time All-SEC honoree Kristofer Stahlberg received the nod in 2001.
The Rebels will travel to Starkville Saturday to face arch-rival Mississippi State in the final regular season match. The two teams will battle at 1 p.m. at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
Ole Miss is gearing up to host the 2003 SEC Championship April 17-20 at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. A four-day pass can be purchased for $20 and single session tickets are available for $7.
