CLEMMONS, N.C. - Laura Evans turned in a solid round of golf on the first day of action at the NCAA East Regional, but it wasn't enough to keep her team in the top half of the standings on Thursday, as Ole Miss ended the first round in 20th with a score of 322.

The freshman from Dalton, Ga., fired a 3-over-par score of 74 in the first round to tie for 24th on the leader board, but it wasn't enough to push the Lady Rebels up in the standings.

Duke led the way after the first round, firing a 288 to claim the top spot. South Carolina's Kristy McPherson and Furman's Brandi Jackson tied for first with scores of 68 after the first day.

"We got off to a strong start today, but we faded down the stretch," said head coach Meghan Bolger. "Laura (Evans) did a good job of staying focused on the back nine today and playing her game. We have to come out tomorrow convinced we can do this and focus on playing a complete round of golf."

Seniors Kerrie Davis and Bernadette Luse finished next in the standings after Evans. Both seniors ended the first day of action tied for 90th overall with scores of 82. Sophomore Nikki Hadd tied for 96th overall with a score of 84, while freshman Sarah Kate Cousart rounded out the squad in 105th with a first round score of 92.

The second round of competition will begin at 7:30 a.m. EST. The tournament is being played at the Salem Glen Country Club, a par-71, 6,116-yard course. Only the top eight teams in the field advance to the NCAA Championships.
