OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team began its quest for a second straight NCAA Tournament berth Monday, as the Rebels held their first preseason practice.

Coming off a 13-5-2 season and a third-place overall finish in the SEC, the Rebels reported to camp Friday evening, and today participated in morning fitness tests and later one-on-one drills. Head coach Steve Holeman said this has been a greatly anticipated day.

"We're very excited about getting all the players here, and pleased with our first day on the field," said Holeman, who has been with the program since its inception in 1994. "We had some nice surprises today. Some of the newcomers stepped up in the fitness tests, and many of the returnees came back in great shape. We're certainly very encouraged about our starting point."

The Ole Miss preseason includes an exhibition match with Oklahoma, Aug. 23 at noon at Burns Park Soccer Complex in North Little Rock, Ark.

The Rebels officially open the 2003 campaign against South Alabama, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at Ole Miss Soccer Complex, as part of a six-game homestand. The squad hosts a school-record 13 home matches this year, including SEC bouts with Alabama, Auburn, South Carolina, Florida and Mississippi State for the Magnolia Cup.
