Rebel Soccer Coach Steve Holeman Reaches 100 Wins

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss soccer head coach Steve Holeman earned his 100th career coaching victory Friday, as the 24th-ranked Rebels slammed Middle Tennessee, 3-0, on a two-goal performance by Karen Hall. Ole Miss improves to 8-1 on the season.

Holeman, the only coach in the history of Ole Miss soccer, is one of only four to reach the century mark in coaching victories in the SEC. Holeman's nine years of coaching in the conference is second only to Warren Lipka's 12 seasons at Kentucky.

"To be honest, it actually sneaks up on you," said Holeman, who was doused in gatorade during a postgame celebration. "It's nice to reach a milestone in your coaching career, and I hope to be around for 100 more."

The momentous victory was a lopsided one for Ole Miss, who finished with a 25-8 shot advantage. After a back-and-forth beginning, the Rebels jumped on top with Hall's first score 12 minutes into play. The junior forward from Southlake, Texas, connected from directly in front after a Leigh Barrow cross.

Hall struck again at the 30-minute mark, taking a ball cleared by the defender and firing from 12 yards out to the far right post. Hall's second career two-goal performance raised her season goal total to four.

Hillary Beckman came off the bench to conclude the evening's scoring in the 73rd minute. Beckman, a sophomore midfielder, blasted from 24 yards in front for her second goal of the year.

Senior goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie collected four saves, as the Rebels notched their sixth shutout of the season. Danielle Perreault saved eight shots in goal for the Blue Raiders, who drop to 4-4 on the campaign.

"We played in two different systems tonight and rotated a lot of players in," Holeman said. "We played what I call a complete game.

"Karen Hall had an outstanding game. All week in practice, we had wanted her to play with her back to pressure, and she did an excellent job of that tonight."

Joining Holeman in the century club was Alabama's Don Staley, who also achieved his 100th win as an SEC coach Friday night.

The Rebels continue the weekend homestand with Southeast Missouri Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The defending Ohio Valley Conference champions are off to a 5-1-3 start to 2003. Sunday's match will be the first ever between the two schools.
