OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss soccer team remained perfect on the young season with a 4-0 beating of Southwest Missouri State Sunday. The Rebels (4-0) have yet to allow a goal this season and have outscored their opponents 20-0.
Ole Miss dominated the Bears (0-2-2) on both sides of the ball, finishing with a 31-4 shot advantage. The 31 shots is the Rebels' highest total since cranking 35 in an 11-0 victory over Alabama A&M in 2001.
"We are extremely happy with our success defensively, and recording 31 shots in the game," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Our objective is to get better each game, and we've been doing that.
"Different teams play different defenses and present a new challenge each time out. We've made adjustments and met each of those challenges. I feel we're steadily becoming more organized as a team."
Ashley Ferree kept her goal-streak alive with her team-high fourth score in the 69th minute from 15 yards away off a Lindley Beckman cross. Ferree, a freshman from Cordova, Tenn., has posted a goal in each of her first four collegiate matches.
Junior forward Karen Hall opened the scoring for the Rebels with a successful header off the goalkeeper's hand at the 6:05 mark. Hillary Beckman picked up the assist and is now tied for team lead with three.
Freshman Emily Brown supplied Ole Miss a 2-0 halftime edge with a 30-yard blast that deflected off a defender 38 minutes in. Senior Amy Sample continued the onslaught in the 62nd minute, connecting from 15 yards in front.
Hall, Brown and Sample each notched their second goal of the new campaign and give the Rebels eight players with two more goals.
The shutout moved senior goalkeeper Brittany Gillespie into first on the Rebels' all-time list with 15 career blankings. The Modesto, Calif., native is also the school's career leader in goals-against average with an 0.98 mark in her four seasons in the Red and Blue.
Ole Miss wraps up the season-opening, six-game homestand next weekend with matches against Wyoming, Friday at 7:30 p.m. CT, and Missouri, Sunday at 1 p.m. The Mizzou faceoff will mark a battle of regional powers, as the Rebels and Tigers rank fifth and sixth, respectively, in the Soccer Buzz Central Region rankings.
Friday will be Dorm Night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium, and Sunday will be Oxford Youth Soccer Day. Both matches will be broadcast on Rebel Radio 92.1 FM and www.OleMissSports.com, and live streaming video will also be available over the internet at www.OleMissSports.tv.
