CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Several members of the Ole Miss men's tennis team advanced to the third round of prequalifying at the All-American Championships Friday afternoon at the Champions Club.
Senior Karim Alayli defeated Juan Carlo Nunez of Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-2, 7-6, in his first match, and then in the afternoon, Alayli downed Mike Weaver of Butler, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the third round. He will face Florida's Ryan Sherry Saturday.
Freshman Bram ten Berge posted two convincing wins to advance to the third round. He downed Florida State's Jason Hood 6-1, 6-1 in the morning and then took care of Brian Morton of UC-Irvine, 6-1, 6-3 in the afternoon. He is now 4-1 on the young season and looks to continue his solid play when he meets Florida's Marty Steigwardt in the third round.
Junior Juan Pablo Di Cesare won his first match, 6-3, 6-2, against Arkansas' Imraan Ismail, before falling in three hard-fought sets to Ryan Stotland of New Mexico in the second round. Di Cesare won the first set 6-3, but Stotland came back to take the second and third sets 6-3, 6-4, respectively.
After a first round bye, sophomore Fredrik Aarum cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Dominick Ozanne of Ohio State in the second round. He will face San Diego State's Armando Carrascosa in the third round.
To advance to the qualifying tournament, a player must win five matches unless they received a first round bye. Saturday's play will include one round of singles and two rounds of doubles. Aarum and Alayli will begin doubles play Saturday.
