Every athlete in collegiate sports has to be able to manage time between the field and the classroom. If the student-athlete is able to have athletic and academic balance, he or she will be widely respected among fellow teammates. There may not be a better athlete who exemplifies this trait than Leigh Barrow of the Ole Miss soccer team.
Barrow, a 5-foot-9 senior from Guntersville, Ala., is in her final campaign with the Rebels. Seeing time at midfielder and defender, Barrow has shown tremendous heart and toughness in helping the team post its most wins ever over a three-year span. During the 2002 and 2003 seasons, she competed in 40 games with a total of 14 starts, and contributed to the squad making consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
During her sophomore season, Barrow connected on her first career goal at arch-rival Mississippi State, and as a junior, she assisted on scores against Jacksonville and Middle Tennessee.
Even with the intensity she brings to the field, Barrow is able to bring that same effort into the classroom. Barrow has achieved such awards as being a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll student, as well as a member of the 2002 NSCAA Academic All-Region team. She has made the Chancellor's Honor Roll five of her six collegiate semesters.
However, Barrow says her greatest accomplishment is being able to represent Ole Miss on a team that has achieved so many of its goals.
For excellence in both soccer and academics, Leigh Barrow is this week's Allstate Insurance Student-Athlete of the Week.
