COLUMBIA, S.C. - Ole Miss' Hillary Beckman provided the game-winning goal in leading the Rebel soccer team to a 1-0 shutout at South Carolina Friday.

The tightly-contested match saw only 17 total shots, but incredible plays on both sides. The deciding sequence came early at the 13:35 mark, when Ole Miss senior Leigh Barrow served a ball into the box from the left flank that the USC goalkeeper was unable to secure. Beckman, a junior midfielder from Anchorage, Ky., took the loose ball and buried it in the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Down by a goal, the Gamecocks (6-8-2, 0-5-2 SEC) intensified their attack in the second stanza against a stiff Rebel defense. Carolina's best opportunity to even the score came in the 86th minute, when Ashley Kirk cracked a line-drive attempt toward the upper corner of the net that was snatched out of the air by Ole Miss keeper Ann Shelton. The redshirt freshman from Tullahoma, Tenn., tallied four saves in earning her fourth complete shutout in goal.

Shelton was joined in the strong defensive effort by sophomores Lyndsey Williams, Ashley Ferree and Elise Karlowicz and freshman Cori Mehan. Williams, Ferree and Mehan played all 90 minutes in helping the Rebels (7-8, 3-4 SEC) snap a two-game skid.

"This match was very similar to the matches last weekend. The only difference is tonight we got the result," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Despite all the frustration this team has experienced this year, they've never given up, and they showed a lot of confidence against a very good South Carolina team."

The Rebels continue the Eastern Division road swing with 12th-ranked Florida Sunday in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament second-round battle, which the Gators took 4-3 in double-overtime. Sunday's game time is set for 2 p.m. ET at Percy Beard Stadium in Gainesville.
