OXFORD, Miss. - The 2004-05 Ole Miss basketball squad opened preseason drills with a pair of practices Saturday. According to seventh-year head coach Rod Barnes, Saturday's workouts were a good way to tip off the season.
"I thought we had two really good practices today," said, Barnes, who has totaled more wins than any Ole Miss coach over a six-year span. "We were able to get in some great work on the offense. I was impressed with the new players, and some of the adjustments they made in their first practice. Specifically, I was pleased with the work by Brian Smith, Todd Abernethy, Bam Doyne and Kendrick Fox."
The Rebels practiced from 8 to 10 a.m. and again from 2 to 4 p.m. The team split into backcourt and frontcourt groups focusing on skills and also got in some five-on-five halfcourt work.
Ole Miss began practice with 16 players today. The Rebels return 11 letterwinners from last year's unit, including starters Abernethy, Tommie Eddie and Justin Johnson. Five new faces also joined the Rebel roster.
Ole Miss returns to practice Sunday afternoon.
