Ole Miss and Vanderbilt End In Soccer Tie

NASHVILLE - Rebel junior Hillary Beckman's 25-yard blast with six seconds left in the second overtime sailed inches over the post, as the Ole Miss soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie at Vanderbilt Sunday.

With the result, the Rebels clinch their eighth consecutive SEC Tournament berth. Ole Miss is the only Western Division team to manage that feat.

Threatening throughout the first half Sunday, Ole Miss got on the board three minutes before the break. After Karen Hall was fouled at the top of the box, Kristal Menard took the Rebel free kick and launched a rocket that was saved by a diving VU goalkeeper. Hall captured the defl ection and buried it in the far corner from 13 yards away. It was the fifth goal of the year for the senior from Southlake, Texas.

In the first dangerous scoring opportunity of the second stanza, the Commodores evened the match at a goal apiece in the 67th minute off a high header in the box by Meghan Habiq.

Despite losing leading-scorer Brittney Potts to injury in the 61st minute, the Ole Miss attack had its chances to take the lead in the second half. Ashley Ferree had a pair of attempts, including a 10-yard rip in the final 12 seconds of regulation that rolled just wide.

Four minutes into the first extra frame, Kelly Renie got in behind the defense for another potential Rebel game-winner, but the her shot in the box sailed just left of the post. Lindley Beckman also had a 20-yard kick stopped by the keeper in the second OT.

Ole Miss outshot Vanderbilt 5-0 in the overtimes and finished with an 18-11 shot advantage.

The Rebels are unbeaten in their last four and wrap up the regular season with Mississippi State Friday at 7 p.m. CT in Starkville with the Magnolia Cup up for grabs.
