OXFORD, Miss - The Ole Miss basketball team picked up its first two signees of the early signing period Wednesday, receiving national letters of intent from high school senior forwards Trey Hampton and Xavier Webb.
Hampton, a 6-foot-7, 215-pounder from Hoover, Ala., is in his fourth year as a starter at Hoover High School and is coming off a junior campaign in which he turned in averages of 21 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals, and 2 assists for the Buccaneers. Hampton was the lone junior on the Class 6A All-State squad.
"We're excited about Trey," said Ole Miss head coach Rod Barnes. "He is similar to Ansu Sesay, in that he can play both small forward and power forward. We feel he can come in and contribute immediately. To go into Alabama and sign Trey is a great get for us."
Webb was one of the fiercest frontcourt players in Tennessee last year, leading all state classifications in blocked shots at five per game and finishing second in rebounds at 11 per outing. The 6-foot-9, 200-pounder from Atwood's West Carroll High School also averaged 23 points in earning First Team All-State and District 6 MVP accolades as a junior.
"Xavier is one of the best face-up big men I saw this year," Barnes said. "He can really shoot the ball and is a very good shot-blocker and rebounder. At 17 years old, he is still young, and we think he still has a chance to grow some.
"Both guys have great size and athleticism."
Barnes' Rebels open the 2004-05 basketball campaign Sunday at the BCA Classic in Milwaukee. Ole Miss takes on South Carolina State at Noon CT.
