FT. WORTH, Texas - The 31st-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season, falling to 35th-ranked Baylor 4-2 at the Colonial Country Club Saturday. Inclement weather forced the match to be moved north to Ft. Worth.
Ole Miss falls to 6-1 on the season, while Baylor got their first win of the season to improve to 1-4.
Due to moving indoors, the match began with singles and when Baylor won, doubles were not played. Baylor got on board first when freshman sensation Carolin Walter defeated two-time All-American Chloe Carlotti 6-0, 6-4 at the top spot. Lady Rebel senior Karem Harboe evened the match with her comeback win over BU's Stephanie Balzert. After losing the first set 6-2, Harboe won the next two 6-3, 6-4 to even the match at 1-1.
Senior Sabrina Peppl went out in three sets to Baylor's Daniela Covello 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 3 singles as Baylor regained the lead, 2-1. Baylor's Daria Potapova defeated sophomore Virginia Tomatis 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot to give her team a 3-1 lead.
Lady Rebel senior Florencia Basile remained undefeated on the season, holding off Zuzana Krchnakova at the No. 5 position 6-4, 7-5 to make it 3-2 Baylor. That left freshman Emily Ladyman battling Baylor's Klara Zrustova at No. 6 singles to see if doubles would be necessary to decide the match. Zrustova won 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the win for Baylor and hand Ladyman her first dual match loss of the season.
The Lady Rebels will travel to New Orleans next weekend to face 27th-ranked Tulane at 1 p.m.
