OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss rifle team suffered a 6,171-6,062 setback to Murray State Saturday afternoon in its final match at the University Rifle Range. Beginning this fall, the Rebels will call the new National Guard facility their home for practices and competitions.
The Racers, who captured the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference championship two weeks ago, took Saturday's smallbore by a score of 4,625-4,544 and air rifle by a count of 1,546-1,518. MSU's Morgan Hicks set facility records in both events with scores of 1,180 and 392, respectively.
Freshman Jennifer Lorenzen led Ole Miss with a 1,151 in smallbore, while sophomore Megan Sandage posted a 1,145, freshman Mara Polonsky recorded a 1,138 and sophomore Laura Gavin turned in a 1,110.
Sandage posted the team's top score in air rifle with a 386, while Lorenzen recorded a 380. Gavin and sophomore Samantha Leach each collected scores of 376.
Saturday's tilt vs. Murray State served as the team's season finale, but not the case for three individuals who will move on to the Junior Olympics March 17-22 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Lorenzen will be representing the state of Tennessee at the Olympic Training Center, while Polonsky will be shooting on behalf of New Hampshire and Gavin on behalf of Rhode Island.
