OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss rifle team celebrated its 2003-04 season with an end-of-the-year banquet Monday evening at Bofield's Restaurant on West Jackson Ave. Approximately 30 people -- including athletic administrators, support staff personnel and parents -- were on hand to honor this year's team and its accomplishments.
Head coach Valerie Boothe handed out several awards as the Rebels officially wrapped up their eighth season of existence.
Freshman Jennifer Lorenzen highlighted the awards ceremony by taking honors as the team's Most Valuable Shooter and Rookie of the Year. Lorenzen was also recognized as a Scholar-Athlete, while she and junior Natasha Phillips were named Academic All-Americans by the National Rifle Coaches Association.
Sophomore Megan Sandage, who was voted team captain for the upcoming season, garnered Iron Gun and Most Dedicated accolades, while Phillips and freshman Jessica McClain picked up a plaque for tying in the annual Rebel (challenge) match.
Sophomore Laura Gavin also picked up some hardware for being named the squad's Most Improved Shooter of the Year.
Lorenzen, Sandage, freshman Mara Polonsky and sophomore Samantha Leach were also presented with National Rifle Association silver medallions for placing second in air rifle at the Murray State Sectional Feb. 15.
The Rebels are expected to return all eight team members in 2004-05 as a result of having no seniors on this year's squad. The program, which has competed at the University Rifle Range for the past eight years, will move to the New National Guard Armory -- a multi-million dollar rifle range and multi-purpose facility -- for practice and competition beginning this fall.
