RIDGELAND, Miss. - Kelly Renie and Brittney Potts each scored a pair of goals as Ole Miss trounced Southern Miss 5-0 Saturday in the highlight game of the Mississippi United Spring Classic, a regional youth tournament at Freedom Ridge Park in Ridgeland.
Renie, who missed the fall with a torn ACL, personally delivered the Rebels a 2-0 halftime lead. The 2002 SEC Freshman of the Year lobbed in a Potts goal kick to put Ole Miss on the board, and she quickly added another score, taking a 50-yard Kristal Menard service and one-timing a volley to the far post. It marked Renie's first two goals of the spring in full-squad play.
Potts scored unassisted to continue the onslaught in the second half. Menard followed with her second goal of the offseason with a one-time volley off a Hillary Beckman corner kick.
Potts finished the night's scoring, beating a Lady Eagle defender off a dribble and connecting with the near post. Potts, a 2003 SEC All-Freshman Team forward, tops the Rebels this spring with five goals.
"It was a great soccer environment with an awesome crowd," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman."We challenged the team before the game to bring their best performance, and they responded with easily our best showing of the spring. We possessed the ball very well and scored some spectacular goals."
The Rebels, who are 2-2-2 in full-squad competition this spring, return to action Saturday, Apr. 17 when they take on an Ole Miss alumni team at 10 a.m. CT. The alumni match will be part of Red-Blue Weekend on the University of Mississippi campus.
