OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss head basketball coach Rod Barnes announced Thursday that Dwayne Curtis has elected to transfer to Ole Miss from Auburn.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, the 6-foot-9, 235-pound center can start practicing with the team in the fall but is ineligible for the 2004-05 season. Curtis may begin playing in the 2005-06 campaign with three years of eligibility remaining.
"We're glad and very fortunate to have Dwayne sign with us," Barnes said. "We think he can contribute to our program and fill a void with his inside play. We feel Dwayne has a chance to be one of the better low-post players in our league. More importantly, he is a better person than basketball player. With family in Clarksdale, it should be an easy adjustment for Dwayne."
Curtis, who just completed his freshman season with the Tigers, played in 19 games with five starts and averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 10.3 minutes per game. The Chicago, Ill., native shot 58 percent from the field.
Curtis notched a career-high 11 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes at Arkansas in his first career start, and then posted 10 points and a career-high nine boards in 24 minutes at No. 5 Mississippi State.
As a senior at Whitney Young High School, Curtis earned All-City honors from the Chicago Tribune. He averaged a double-double with 18 points and a state-best 12 rebounds per game in helping lead Whitney Young to a 21-5 record and the Sectionals.
