Rebels Post Six Second-Half Goals in Season-Opening Win

8/27/2004 | Soccer

Aug. 27, 2004

OXFORD, Miss. - Behind six second-half goals, Ole Miss opened the 2004 soccer campaign in impressive fashion Friday night, coasting to a 7-0 victory over Northwestern State. Brittney Potts notched her first career hat trick, and Karen Hall added her fourth career two-goal outing. Despite the blowout, the first half was a challenging one for the Rebels. At the break, Ole Miss enjoyed a 10-2 edge on shots but only a 1-0 lead over the Demons on the scoreboard. Potts, a sophomore from Franklin, Tenn., was the only Rebel to connect in the opening frame of the season, striking from eight yards away at the 28:30 mark, off passing from Ashley Ferree and Kristal Menard. "We didn't play poorly in the first half. Northwestern State just did a great job defensively," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "They were very organized and made it difficult for us to score. But our team came out on a mission in the second half. Once we put that second goal in, Northwestern State collapsed a little bit, and Ole Miss took over." The second Rebel score came just over two minutes after halftime, with Hall heading in a Cori Mehan cross. A senior from Southlake, Texas, Hall continued the onslaught 54 seconds later, making good on a penalty kick following a Northwestern State foul in the box. Off a Hillary Beckman assist, Potts used a header to put Ole Miss up 4-0 in the 60th minute and set up freshman Amy Gill at 68:30 to pad the lead. Fellow freshman Chrissy Strini also picked up a goal in her first collegiate match in the 75th minute. Potts finished off the scoring at the 76:50 mark with a 12-yard boot of a Sammi Gould pass. Ole Miss concluded the night with a 22-6 shot advantage, and redshirt freshman Ann Shelton earned the victory in her first career match in goal. The Rebels continue the opening weekend of the new season with Middle Tennessee Sunday. The action starts at 1 p.m. CT at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
