OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss finished off a perfect opening weekend to the new soccer season Sunday with a 4-1 victory over Middle Tennessee. Kelly Renie led the way with her seventh career multiple-goal effort and her first two scores of the young campaign. With Friday's win over Northwestern State, the Rebels are off to a 2-0 start and outscored their first two opponents 11-1. Ole Miss wraps up the three-game homestand with Memphis Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT in Oxford. Senior Karen Hall jumpstarted the Rebel offense Sunday with her third goal in two matches, connecting with the back of the net on a sliding kick from 12 yards out in the eighth minute. Renie and Lindley Beckman assisted on the score. At the 29:25 mark, Kristal Menard sent the ball ahead of the defense, and Renie got in behind and went far post to put Ole Miss ahead 2-0 at the break. It was Renie's first goal since suffering a season-ending ACL tear in last year's second match. Shortly after halftime, the Rebels surrendered their first score of the 2004 campaign, and Middle Tennessee (0-2) pulled within a goal as Debs Brereton blasted an 18-yard shot to the far upper corner in the 59th minute. However, Ole Miss would put the match away seven minutes later, when Brittney Potts netted her fourth goal of the weekend with a steal and 20-yard rip, one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Potts, who already boasts 10 total points this season, had another attempt deflected by the keeper in the 89th minute, and Renie buried the rebound in the net for her second goal of the afternoon. On a rain-drenched field, the Rebels concluded the match with a 23-8 shot advantage, and redshirt freshman keeper Ann Shelton notched five saves in goal. "The field conditions were definitely a factor for both teams," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "A wet field is not conducive to our style of play, because we like to possess the ball. "Middle Tennessee came out and played very physical, and I don't think we did a good job of responding to their play. Our intensity was lower than I would have liked. We had such a high-effort game Friday night, and I would have liked to have seen that carry over to today." The Rebels have begun 2-0 for the third straight year, and put that undefeated record on the line against regional rival Memphis Tuesday. The Tigers return 17 letterwinners and seven starters from last year's 5-10-3 squad. Memphis opened the campaign with a 4-0 triumph at Alabama A&M Sunday. Ole Miss enjoys a 4-1-1 all-time edge against the Tigers, and prevailed 7-0 in last year's bout in Oxford.
