OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team will compete in one of the toughest tournaments in the nation this weekend, as they take to the courts in Memphis, Tenn., for the Wilson/ITA Southeast Region Indoor Championships. The tournament begins Thursday with the qualifying draw at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
The main draw begins Friday and concludes Monday with the championship match for singles and doubles.
The Southeast is arguably the top tennis region in the country with four teams finishing the 2005 season ranked among the nation's top 10, including Ole Miss at No. 3. Eight teams from the region ended the year in the top 25.
This weekend's field includes 25 of the nation's top ranked singles players, including No. 14 Greg Ouellette of Florida, No. 17 Ken Skupski of LSU, No. 20 Josh Cohen of Miami, No. 26 Luigi D'Agord, also of Miami, No. 40 Vlad Obradovic of Florida, No. 43 Erling Tveit of Ole Miss, No. 56 Chris Brandi of Florida and No. 57 Andreas Siljestrom of Middle Tennessee.
Ole Miss placed all seven members of the team in the main draw. Joining Tveit in the main draw, will be Eric Claesson, Juan Pablo Di Cesare, Bram ten Berge, Fredrik Aarum, Jakob Klaeson and Christopher Rea.
The Rebels are off to an excellent start this fall having captured three tournament titles and combining for a 40-14 record in singles play.
"We are excited that all seven players got in the main draw," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "The Southeast Region is regarded as the toughest tennis region in the nation, and we are looking forward to facing a tough field. Hopefully we can continue the success that we've enjoyed so far this fall."
The winners of the singles and doubles this weekend qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second college major, to be held Nov. 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
